Pocket watch with a repeater on a bell
–
An early gold verge watch with repeater on bell, made by Peter Dutens in London, England, circa 1750. The case of this watch is crafted from 18 carat gold and features fine sound openings, a bell and a numbered dome. The enamel dial features an outer minute and hour track with Arabic 15 minute- and hour numerals and very beautiful original gold hands. The numbered movement is equipped with a very fine quality verge escapement, a quarter repeater on a bell and a diamond end stone.
The dome and movement bear matching numbers and are signed.

Dutens
Peter Dutens was a Huguenot jeweller, horologist and merchant registered in London from 1743 until 1760. While known to the trade as a “pocket watchmaker,” he primarily operated as an elite retailer and assembler rather than personally crafting the mechanisms. He commissioned movements from specialised craftsmen, housed them in luxury cases and retailed them.
