Gold half hunter pocket watch
–
An English 18 carat yellow gold half hunter pocket watch made by J.W. Benson in London, circa 1900. It has a stemwound, stemset mechanical movement with lever escapement, micrometre regulator, and fishscale damascening, signed 17 Jewels, Swiss Made. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and a full set of blue steel hands. Both the dial and movement are signed J.W. Benson, London, Swiss Made. The English gold plated half hunter case has a hinged front cover with enamelled numerals, a smooth plain finish, and is engraved with initials. The watch includes its original case labelled R.C.F. These initials stand for Robert Charles Fry, a respected London case maker active roughly between 1880 and 1910.

–
J.W. Benson was a leading London watchmaker during the 19th and early 20th centuries, celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship, a royal clientele, and innovative designs.
–
The Benson family’s watchmaking roots date back to 1749. The company J.W. Benson was officially established in 1847 by brothers James William Benson and Samuel Suckley Benson. After ending their partnership in 1855, James William continued running the business. Its main location was on Ludgate Hill in London, with branches on Old Bond Street and at the Royal Exchange. The company gained prestigious status and earned several Royal Warrants, including from Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia, and the Kings of Siam and Denmark.
–
The Benson factory on Ludgate Hill was bombed in 1941 during World War II, halting watch production. After the war, the firm operated as a retailer, selling imported Swiss movements from brands such as Longines, Cyma, and Vertex under its own name.
–
In 1973, the brand was sold to the royal jeweller Garrard. Today, vintage J.W. Benson watches—especially original English pocket watches and early gold wristwatches—are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and classic British design.
