Pocket watch with rare 1/8 repeater
–
An exquisite, early repoussé double case cylinder watch with rare 1/8 repeater and case of exceptional quality, made by Henry Walpole in London, England, circa 1750. The 18 Carat golden double open faced case has a pierced outer case that features repoussé decoration showcasing a highly detailed scene with eight figures. The inner case is also pierced.
The white enamel dial features an outer ring with black Arabic numerals for the minutes and an inner ring with black Roman numerals for the hours. The dial also includes what appears to be the original hands.
The movement of this watch boasts a fine cylinder escapement, a hallmark of English watchmaking excellence. The inclusion of a diamond end stone adds to the overall quality and precision of the movement. A standout feature of this watch is its repeating function. It chimes the hours, quarters, and eighths of an hour on a bell, providing both practicality and elegance. This feature would have been particularly useful in a time when watches were not as readily accessible as they are today.
The dust cover and movement of this watch are not only matching in numbers but are also signed, further adding to its authenticity and value.
