Gold watch with independent centre seconds by John E. Hyde & Sons
–
A fine English/French gold open faced dual time pocket watch with jumping quarter seconds and independent centre seconds, circa 1840. This watch features a frosted gilded movement with two barrels for the going and centre seconds trains, a lever escapement, 23 jewels, a bimetallic compensation balance, and a blued steel overcoil hairspring with a bimetallic compensation curb and parachute suspension. It has a gold dial with two eccentric engine turned dials for the primary and secondary time zones, along with an engine turned subsidiary dial for constant and jumping 1/4 seconds, surrounded by an engraved lakeside scene and foliate scrolls at the base.
–
The gold case showcases a back that is chased and engraved with scrolling flowers and foliage, while the front and back bezels and the pendant are heavily chased and engraved with stylised flowers and foliage. The milled band includes a stop slide, and the cuvette is decorated to match the case back, featuring four apertures for winding each train and setting each time zone. The cuvette is signed John E. Hyde & Sons London & Paris and further engraved with movement details, while the back cover and cuvette are numbered. The engraving on the cuvette describes the movement and characterises the watch as An Improved Observation Piece.

The movement is functioning, and the surfaces generally appear in good cosmetic condition, with a few minor scratches and some oxidation spots. The quarter seconds are jumping correctly, and the centre and subsidiary seconds are also running. The trains are winding smoothly, and both pairs of hands are also setting smoothly. The stop slide to the case side is operational. The dial is generally in good condition, with minor scuffs on the subsidiary dials. The case is in good overall condition, retaining excellent definition in the decoration, albeit with minor scuffs.
