Gold verge pocket watch by John Archambo

A small English gold, gilt metal, bloodstone and diamond-set verge watch, circa 1740. The watch has a gilded full plate movement features a decoratively pierced and foliate engraved masked balance cock, plain flat balance, fusee and chain, and turned baluster pillars. It is signed Jno. Archambo, London. The gold champlevé dial has Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, blued steel beetle and poker hands, and a winding aperture between 3 and 4 o’clock. The centre of the dial features banners signed Archambo, London. The gold single case has gilt metal bezels, the back is set with a single bloodstone, and the bezel is set with 6 bloodstone panels each interspersed with a diamond. It also has a diamond-set thumbpiece, stirrup pendant, and bow.

The dial is bright and clean, the bloodstone on the back of the case appears to be in good overall condition but possibly later replaced, and two bloodstone panels on the bezel have a crack. The bezels on the front are tarnished.

John Archambo was born in France in 1699 before moving to London where he married in 1724. Archambo is recorded as working in King Street in 1740 before moving to Gerard Street in Westminster from 1741-51. Retiring around 1754, Archambo died in c.1777.
