Gold repoussé verge watch by John Cater

A fine and rare 22 carat gold English pair cased verge watch with high relief repoussé scene made for the Dutch market, circa 1746. This timepiece features a gilded full plate fire gilt movement with verge escapement, a plain flat balance, a decoratively pierced and floral engraved bridge balance cock, decorative pillars, and a fusee and chain. It is signed Cater, London and numbered with a serial number. The white enamel dial is adorned with Roman numerals, an outer arcaded minute ring with Arabic numerals, and blued steel beetle and poker hands.

The pocket watch features a simple 22 carat gold plain inner case with a winding aperture at the back, a stirrup pendant and bow, and a decorative engraved on the top. It is hallmarked London 1746. The repoussé outer case is intricately decorated with a high relief scene depicting Meleager and Atalante, surrounded by chased and engraved shell and scroll work. Additionally, the bezel is adorned with floral sprays. Movement signed and numbered.
