José Rodríguez Losada, a Spanish watchmaker, was born on 8 May 1797 in Iruela, León province. During his youth, he spent some time at the court in Madrid. A liberal former army officer, Losada eventually left Spain for political reasons and settled in England, where he opened a shop in London near Euston Road. He produced a wide range of high-quality chronometers and clocks, which he sold domestically and exported to Spain and South America. In 1835, he opened a grand showroom at 105 Regent Street. Losada always maintained connections with his native Spain, and after winning a prize in 1864, he supplied 36 chronometers to the Spanish government through the Royal Observatory in Cádiz. He is also renowned for the clock tower he presented to Madrid in 1866, which stands at the Puerta del Sol. The “Horological Journal” noted in 1878 that these included highly refined watches and all kinds of complicated watches and repeaters,” as well as “perpetual calendars and chronographs, some exceptionally good chronometers, fine watches, astronomical clocks, and carriage clocks. He signed his watches JR Losada. Additionally, he authored poetry, several of which he dedicated to his friend Joseph Zorrilla.
