Gold open faced keyless lever pocket watch
–
A fine English three piece Edwardian 18 carat gold open faced pocket watch with ensemble made by J.W. Benson in London, circa 1912. The watch is powered by a high grade mechanical keyless winding 3/4 plate gilded brass movement (The New Ludgate / Best London Make), featuring a lever escapement, compensation balance wheel, and blued steel screws, signed J.W. Benson / 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill / London. The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals, an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and blued steel poire hands, signed J.W. Benson / London. It is housed in a substantial 18 carat solid yellow gold open faced case with a plain polished reverse back cover. The interior caseback and gold cuvette bear official London 18K gold hallmarks for 1912 and the maker’s mark JWB.

This watch is completed by a heavy 18K gold Albert chain and a 9K gold mechanical pencil by Sampson Mordan & Co. (hallmarked London 1937), the premier maker of luxury writing instruments in England. Weighing 152.3 grams, this set represents a magnificent and authentic complete presentation ensemble spanning the Edwardian and interwar eras of British horology.
