Founded in 1871, Smith & Sons was one of London’s best known purveyors of high quality and complicated watches. Makers to the admiralty and government of the United Kingdom and India, their watches and Kew rated chronometers utilised the English Nicole, Nielsen and Co or Swiss movements. The Tourbillon developed by Abraham-Louis Breguet circa 1795 was designed to counteract the effect of gravity on a watch’s timekeeping ability by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in such a way that it will rotate independently from the rest of the timepiece.
