Pink gold lever pocket watch by Joseph Jump
–
A fine pink gold English open faced quarter repeating lever watch with moon phase, short chain and key, circa 1896. The watch has a gilded movement with lever escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, a diamond endstone, and two polished steel hammers repeating on two coiled gongs. It is signed and numbered by Jump, located at 11 Old Bond Street, London. The watch features an engine turned silver dial with a satin finished chapter ring, black Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, and an aperture for the age and phases of the moon. The aperture showcases a gold moon and silver stars against a blue background, with gold moon hands. The 18k pink gold case has an engine turned back, bezel, and band. The case side features a short sunken repeating slide and a plain ring pendant and is hallmarked London, 1896. It also includes a plain polished gold cuvette with apertures for winding and handset, and it is numbered 575 with the maker’s mark JA for James Ayres. Additionally, it comes with a short chain and key.

The dial is in good overall condition with minor tarnishing. The case shows some light rubbing to the engine turned decoration, but the patterning remains clear. There is a small, 5mm wide section on the band beneath 7–8 o’clock that has been polished and lightly reengraved with crosshatching. The movement is running, and the plates appear to be in good condition, although the mainspring barrel is tarnished. The hands are slightly misaligned and currently out of sync with repeating, so they should be reset.

In 1827, Joseph Jump began his apprenticeship under Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy, eventually taking over the business in 1855. After relocating to Pall Mall in 1880, Joseph passed away in 1899. The business continued as Jump & Sons, operating on Mount Street from 1898 until it ceased trading in 1934.
