A decorative English silver, one-handed verge pocket watch, circa 1650.
Full plate movement, gilded brass, steel, partly blue, silver, verge escapement, and signed on the back: Robert Smith in Popeshead Ally. Silver, gilded brass dial with flower decor on engraved center, Roman radial hours and single hand. Silver, gilded brass chased and engraved case.

Naturalistic flowers in formal arrangements similar to those engraved on the dial of this watch were introduced by models in engravings of ornament during the middle years of the seventeenth century. The shell of a sea urchin inspired the form of the case.
