An English silver pair-cased key-wind pocket watch with repoussé decoration, circa 1774-1775.
Full plate fire gilt fusee verge movement, silver regulation. Brass champlevé dial with Roman radial hours, an outer arcaded minute ring with Arabic five minutes numerals, applied half-hour knobs for time reading by night, and gilt-pierced steel hands. Two cases – an inner polished silver case and an outer repoussé silver case. The outer case is decorated with repoussé work, a technique where the metal is hammered or pressed from the back to create a raised design on the front. Signature on the dial: TARTS, and on movement: Tarts / LONDON.

The watch bears several markings inside the inner case, including the maker’s mark, London Assay office mark, London date letter for 1774-75, English quality mark for sterling, and a Dutch import mark on small objects of gold and silver used from 1859-1909.
