Silver triple-cased verge watch by W. Welldon
–
A stunning triple-cased English verge pocket watch, crafted in silver and featuring a tortoiseshell and repoussé case, circa 1790.
This exquisite timepiece is a true testament to the craftsmanship of 18th-century British watchmakers. The gilt metal full plate movement features a verge escapement, chain and fusee, and a three-arm steel balance. The balance cock is a work of art with stunning floral motifs engraved and pierced. The enamel dial is equally impressive, with Roman radial hours, an arcaded minute ring with Arabic five-minute numerals, and a polychrome enamel painting in the centre. The gilt steel hands add a touch of elegance to the overall design. The watch is housed in three cases, each one more intricate than the last. The first is a silver and tortoiseshell decorated case, followed by a silver repoussé case, and finally, a plain silver case.
The movement is signed by W. Welldon of London, a renowned watchmaker of the era.

The movement is numbered 1744. The markings are located inside the back of the inner case. Four markings are present on the watch. The first marking is a W D within a rectangle. The second marking is a lion passant, the English quality mark for sterling. The third marking is a leopard’s head crowned, the London assay office mark. Finally, the fourth marking is the letter P within a shield, which may be the London date mark. These markings provide important information about the watch, including its quality and origin. Overall, these markings are essential for identifying and understanding the history of this pocket watch.
