Gold Louis XV pocket watch

An early, high quality open faced pocket watch made by Antoine Duclos in Paris, France, circa 1750. The numbered, exceptionally heavy and solid Louis XV case of this watch, crafted from 18 carat gold, features the 18K gold hallmark Orleans 1744-1750 PDM and a decorative guilloché design on the back. The original white enamel dial features Roman hours, an outer minute track with Arabic five minute numerals and very fine gold hands. The movement is equipped with an early verge escapement, worm screw regulation and an exceptionally large balance wheel.
The dial and movement are signed.

Antoine Duclos was an 18th century French watchmaker who operated as a journeyman or master craftsman in the historic Saint-Germain district of Paris. Historical horological archives, such as the “Pariser Uhrmacher Register”, document his life and work around the mid 1700s.
