Extremely rare pocket watch with strike on bell

An extremely rare Rococo four colour gold verge watch with painting and strike on bell, made by Jullien Le Roy in Paris, France, circa 1760. The pair case of this watch was crafted from 18 carat gold and features an outer case with fine sound openings, a raised flower garland in four different shades of gold, an elaborate enamel painting on the back, a pierced plain inner case and a bell. The white enamel dial features an outer minutes track with Arabic 5 minute numerals, Roman hour numerals and gold hands. The beautifully decorated movement is fitted with a verge escapement and a quarter repeater.
The dome, dial and movement are signed.

The watch is of museum quality. Julien Le Roy was the king’s watchmaker and one of the best of his time. The spelling of his first name on the dome could be an indication that this watch was intended for the English speaking market.
