Pocket watch with magnificent case

A pocket watch with rare repeater and very rare magnificent case, made by the royal watchmaker Baillon in Paris, France, circa 1750. The open faced high quality case of this watch is crafted from 18 Carat gold and has very rare repoussé work with raised flowers on a grained background on the back and a bell. The Louis XV white enamel dial has Arabic five minute – and Roman hour numerals and the presumably, original hands. The movement has a verge movement with a rare à toc and à tact repeater. The movement is signed.

Jean Baptiste III Albert Baillon (d. 1772) became ‘Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Reine’ in 1727, ‘Premier Valet de Chambre de la Reine’ (before 1748), then ‘Premier Valet de Chambre’ and in 1770 he was appointed “Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Dauphine Marie-Antoinette”. He settled in the Place Dauphine in 1738 and in the Rue Dauphine from 1751. Jean-Baptiste III Baillon was one of the most important watchmakers of the 18th century in terms of the size of his business and an extremely wealthy man. Berthoud described his company as the finest and wealthiest watch business.
