Gold open faced verge watch
–
A French 18 carat yellow gold open faced pocket watch, dating from the mid 19th century. This watch features a mechanical movement with a verge escapement, a crown winding system and a pin pusher setting mechanism located near the 11 o’clock position on the back profile. The white enamel dial displays black Roman numeral hour markers, an outer minute track with Arabic five minute numerals (5–60), and a dedicated subdial at the 6 o’clock position (small seconds hand missing), paired with ornate openwork steel hands. The 18 carat yellow gold case features a finely engraved back cover, decorated with a central unengraved shield shaped cartouche, encircled by an elegant laurel wreath and foliate garlands, on a subtly textured background. The case is fitted with a fluted winding crown and an oval bow ring on a tall cylindrical stem. The interior features a solid 18 carat gold dust cover bearing French horsehead assay hallmarks, indicating production in the French provinces between 1838 and 1898. The protective crystal shows signs of damage.
