Gold, aquamarine, and sapphire-set watch by Boubon
–
A French gold, aquamarine, and sapphire set open faced keywind verge pocket watch, circa 1825. This watch features a gilded full-plate movement with verge escapement, a flat three-arm balance, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, fusee and chain, and cylindrical pillars. It is signed Boubon Palais Royal No. 124 with the serial number 32979. The gold dial has an engine-turned centre, a chapter ring with polished Roman numerals against a stippled ground, a minute ring with a similar finish, an aperture for winding, and gold moon hands. It is signed to the polished banner Boubon à Paris. The gold case features intricate scrolling rope and bead-form decoration on the back, band, and bezel, accented by sapphire and aquamarine stones. It is numbered 32979 and bears Paris control marks from 1819 to 1838.

The watch is in good aesthetic condition and is running smoothly. The dial is clean with bright decoration, and the case is in good overall condition with some tarnishing and scorch marks.

Boubon established his business in 1806 at Palais du Tribunal. In 1810 he moved to the Galerie de Pierre in the Palais Royal, where he remained until 1820. In 1830 he was at Galerie Colbert. It is interesting to note that Boubon followed in the footsteps of the famous Oudin, who in 1804 was doing business at the Palais du Tribunal, and who in 1810 moved to the Galerie de Pierre, where he also remained ten years. This watch displays certain characteristics of Oudin and it is conceivable that Boubon worked closely with Oudin. The Musée International d’Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds has a watch made by Boubon.

Signed: Boubon à Paris
