Enamel-decorated gold pocket watch by Auguste Bretonneau
–
An exceptional, French large gold and painted-on enamel pre-balance spring, single-hand pendant watch, circa 1645-1650.
This timepiece has a gilt brass, steel and partly blue full plate movement with fusee regulator, going train, verge escapement, ratchet-and-click set-up for the mainspring, steel ratchet wheel, and pierced cock. The dial features a white enamel disk with Roman numerals for the hour chapter painted in black, half-hour marks, and steel hand. The centre of the dial showcases a polychrome enamel painted scene. The gold cases of the timepiece are adorned with polychrome enamel paintings inspired by a print from Antonio Tempesta’s 1609 series illustrating Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The movement is signed by Auguste Bretoneau Paris.
