Gold calendar watch with short chain by Breguet
–
A French gold quarter repeating ruby cylinder calendar watch with day and date and short chain with ratchet key, circa 1810. This exquisite timepiece features a frosted gilded movement with a ruby cylinder escapement, a plain three arm balance equipped with a regulator and parachute suspension, a spiral spring with a compensation curb, and two polished steel hammers that chime on flat faced coiled gongs. The silver engine turned dial boasts a satin finished chapter ring adorned with black Roman numerals and a similarly finished outer minute ring. Three subsidiary dials with contrasting engine turned finishes and chapter rings display seconds, date, and day. The blued steel hands add a refined touch.
–
Gold engine turned case and band, the centrepiece of the back has a monogrammed circular cartouche engraved with J.W. The ¼ turn plunge pendant facilitates repetition. In contrast, the polished hinged gold cuvette with milled borders bears the signature Breguet and is numbered 1672. The case back is marked 1872 [sic] and features an indistinct maker’s mark. Accompanying the watch is a short gold chain complete with a ratchet key.

The movement is not functioning. The pendant rotates, plunges, and winds its train but fails to engage the repeating mechanism, so it does not currently chime. There are some scratches on the plates, with a deeper scratch on the bridge next to the balance cock. The dial has been cleaned and refreshed in the past, showing light scuffs, scratches, and some loss of the black infill on the numerals. The engine turning on the case back displays rubbing along the edges but remains generally well defined. The key is significantly worn and no longer appears to wind the watch.
