An extremely rare pocket watch with virgule escapement, repeater and concealed erotic painting, made by Johann Christian Tochtenberger in Heilbronn, Germany,  circa 1810. The numbered open faced case of this watch is crafted from 18 Carat gold and has the case maker’s punch PC, very fine sound openings, a concealed second bottom with extremely rare enamel painting (covered with protective lacquer) of Bacchus and Ariadne in an erotic scene and a decorated back lid. The white enamel dial has Arabic quarter and hour numerals and exceptional gold hands. The movement extremely rare lépine caliber with a small integrated bell, a virgule escapement and repeating the hours and quarters.
Dial and movement are signed.

Johann Christian Tochtenberger (18 December 1780 – 6 July 1850) was a member of the Tochtenberger family who were watchmakers in Heilbronn. He was active  in the late 18^th century, particularly around the 1780’s.
Both Johann Tochtenberger (J.T.) and Johann Christian Tochtenberger (J.C.) made significant contributions to watchmaking in Heilbronn:
