Pendant watch with stackfreed, striking mechanism
–
A large Renaissance pendant watch with stackfreed, striking mechanism and sundial, made in Southern Germany, circa 1580. The case is crafted from brass fire gilt, is entirely pierced, the bottom has an oval bell, the back a mythological scene: under a canopy stands Argonaut Jason with the Golden Fleece, surrounded by typical renaissance tendrils and two greyhounds. The lid is decorated with floral and figural motifs: at the lower end there are two angels blowing trombones, above them monkeys, followed by dolphins in the renaissance style and finally an angel spreading his arms at the top. Central is a small lid, also pierced (the lid was replaced later), when opened there is a horizontal sundial with a compass (the compass is no longer original) and a thread is attached to the lid to cast a shadow. The compass has a silver leaf with an engraved eight part compass rose.

The fire gilt brass dial has two hour scales for I to XII and 13 to 24, the border is engraved with deer and winged fantasy figures as well as floral motifs. The central rotating silver alarm disc has an iron hand. With the integrated sundial it was possible to adjust the mechanical watch and set it correctly again.
The early movement has a verge escapement with an alarm without a fusee (restored). The stackfreed is used to balance the mainspring force and the gilt floral brass verge cock is fixed with pins. The movement of the two legged iron rim foliot (without hairspring) is equipped with a hogs bristle regulator.
