Unsigned gilt metal one handed clock watch
–
An early German gilt metal stack freed one handed clock watch, circa 1580. This watch features an iron full plate movement with a verge escapement, a plain flat balance, a stack freed and striking hammer mounted to the backplate, cylindrical pillars and a bell on the inside back. The dial has been re gilded and engraved with Roman numerals, with half hour divisions between them and touch pins above. The center is chased and engraved with flowers and foliage and it has a blued steel, floriated hand.
–
The brass case has also been re gilded and features a lid with pierced roundels for the numerals. The center is pierced, chased and engraved with the Virgin Mary and Christ child within a blazing mandorla. The inside lid is decoratively engraved, and the bulbous case sides have pierced and engraved scrolling decoration. The back is similarly pierced, chased and engraved with decoration depicting Christ crucified in the center, a skull and crossbones beneath, surrounded by scrolling flowers and foliage.
