Silver open faced pocket watch by Johann Beer

A rare, one handed pair-cased German verge pocket watch with mock pendulum, circa 1690.
Two cases: outer case – silver, tortoiseshell covered, inlaid engraved silver decoration; Inner case – silver, polished. Signed champlevé silver dial with radial Roman numerals, in the centre a cartouche with signature and a single gilt hand. Full plate movement, keywind, firegilt, signed, with florally engraved and pierced ornaments, chain/fusee, Egyptian movement pillars, ring blance with “mock pendulum” and very finely florally engraved balance cock.

Johann Beer the Elder Beer was born 1651 in Ulm. He was accepted into the clockmaker’s guild in 1687 and from 1701 until 1734 held numerous high positions in the guild (“Schaumeister” and “Zwoelfermeister”). The city of Ulm owns many clocks by Beer, who died in 1741.
