Unusual pair of deck watches
–
An extremely unusual pair of chronometer deck watches, made for the navy, by Julius Assmann, Glashütte I/Sa, Germany, circa 1915. The numbered plain cases of these watches were crafted from silver and their white enamel dials feature Arabic hour numerals, subsidiary seconds dials at 6 o’clock and blued steel hands. The numbered movements are fitted with a deck chronometer escapement and a moustache lever.
The cases and movements have matching numbers and the dial and movements are signed.

These very rare deck chronometers were made in Glashütte mainly for use in the navy; a few of these watches were also used in research institutes, e.g. the “Königliche Astrophysikalischen Observatorium” and in the “Königlichen Geodätischen Institut in Potsdam”. These rare chronometers are almost never offered as a matching pair.

Signed: J. Assmann, Glashütte I/Sa
