Pocket watch with striking mechanism
–
A large museum quality Friedberg pocket watch with striking mechanism, probably made by Caidan Weschl from Landberg in Bayern, Germany, circa 1730. This open faced pocket watch has a bell and three cases crafted from silver: the outer case is covered with ray skin, the second case is of outstanding quality pierced repoussé and the third case is also pierced and decorated with mythical figures and birds. The champlevé enamel dial features Arabic numerals for five minute intervals, Roman hour numerals and gilt hands. The movement has an early verge escapement with extremely rare decoration, a silver edged plate marked London, pillars, an escapement wheel and cock and a quarter repeater. The dial is signed.

Like many Friedberg watches, this watch bears a deliberately falsified English signature. In fact, it is very likely to be Caidan Welsch from Landsberg in Bavaria. The condition and work of this watch is outstanding and extremely rare.
