A German, very fine, quarter repeating Friedberger pocket watch with repoussé case and striking mechanism on bell, circa 1720.
Engraved gilt full plate movement with fusee verge escapement, pierced and engraved balance cock, ruby end stone, square baluster pillars, silver regulation, polished hammers, early spindle mechanism with shell decoration, also decorated with mythical creatures, plate signed, repetition of the hours and quarter hours. Particularly beautiful signed white enamel dial, violet polychrome painted scroll decoration with signature to centre, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with Arabic numeral five-minute markers and gilt Louis XV style hands. Double-case: Polished inner case with pierced and engraved band, rimace and mythical creatures; repoussé outer case depicting Britannia and Father Time, bell secured by one screw. Dial and movement signed.

Benedikt Fürstenfelder, German watchmaker
Benedikt Fürstenfelder was born on January 2, 1680 as the son of Johannes Fürstenfelder (living in Aichach) and his wife Elisabetha. In 1707, Fürstenfelder married Magdalena Gastl von Laimering. At the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century, he manufactured numerous table and pocket watches and carriage clocks as a Friedberg clockmaker near Augsburg. A table clock by Fürstenfelder is in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum collection. He also made the earliest known spindle clock with a minute repeater, shown in “The Masis Collection of Horological Masterpieces”! Benedikt Fürstenfelder died in Friedberg (Bavaria) as Senator of the Outer Council on July 26, 1754.
