Silver watch with pouzait type escapement by Joh. HacRenbracht
–
A German silver pocket watch with pouzait type lever escapement and deadbeat center seconds, circa 1800. The unsigned gilded full plate movement features an aperture that reveals the Pouzait type lever escapement, a large pink gold balance with spiral arms, and a fan form balance cock with a broad regulation arc. It has a white enamel regulator type dial, signed Joh. HacRenbracht à Halberstadt, which includes an eccentric subsidiary time dial with Arabic numerals, an outer seconds ring, a dead beat center seconds, and an aperture for winding. The silver case exhibits a decoratively engraved border on the back, a vacant cartouche on the base, a milled band, and a stop slide beneath the bezel at the 15 second marker. The case back is stamped ALI incuse and numbered.

The movement operates smoothly. Some oxidation is evident on the steel components. The stop/start slide is currently functioning properly. The dial has a significant repair around the winding hole, which has discoloured. There are a few small chips in the center of the dial, otherwise, it is in acceptable condition. The case is dirty and tarnished, displaying light scuffs and marks. The glass is slightly loose.

In the late 18th century, Jean-Moïse Pouzait (1743-1793) developed a lever escapement featuring a large seconds beating balance, whose slow oscillations enabled the incorporation of a dead center seconds hand.
