A Swiss 18 carat rose gold open faced minute repeating pocket watch, circa 1890. Retailed by Spaulding & Co, Chicago. Sold on 8th October 1891. Ultra-thin quarter-plate movement, 29 jewels. Cuvette signed Spaulding & Co. White enamel dial with Dauphine numerals, black Arabic hours, gold Arabic minutes and seconds, subsidiary seconds, Louis XV hands, small seconds hand. Plain case, snap-on back. Dial signed, case, cuvette and movement signed and numbered. Comes with an Extract from the Archives confirming the production of this watch in 1890.

Repeating watches strike the hour on demand by either a push-piece or a bolt in the band. The minute repeating mechanism has two gongs, one low one for the hours and a high one for the minutes. The quarter hours are indicated by a succession of high and low tones. Further highlighting this open faced minute repeating watch is that it is made especially for Spaulding & Co, the famous American retailer from Chicago. What further distinguishes this watch is the ultra-thin movement and a quarter-plate calibre.
