A Swiss silver open faced split seconds chronograph lever pocket watch made for the Observatory Time Contest in Besançon, circa 1938. Sold in September 1938 to Mr. Purpiss for 6800 Francs. Highly jewelled lever movement stamped with Viper’s head quality mark from French National Observatory of Besançon. White enamel dial, Breguet numerals, blued steel moon hands, outer track calibrated for tachometer, subsidiary dials for constant seconds and 60 minute register. Polished case, milled band. Dial signed, case numbered and stamped ‘SG’.

The present example is part of only few watches that were made for timing contest and obtained the quality hallmark of French National Observatory in Besançon characterized by the Viper’s head stamped on the back movement plate. The mark in form of a Viper’s head was applied by the Observatory of Besançon on few watches which also received the Bulletin de Première classe.
