Gold and silver pocket watch by Leroy
–
A unique and rare French quarter repeating watch with perpetual movement, housed in a later gold and silver case, circa 1790 and beyond. Gilded full plate movement with a later cylinder escapement and screw set plain three arm balance. It features a going barrel wound by a large crescent shaped platinum weight, engraved with Leroy rue Dauphine à Paris. The weight includes two polished steel banking springs and blued steel friction rollers, and it repeats on two blued steel coiled gongs. The backplate is signed Leroy, no. 2407. It has a later silver engine turned dial with a polished chapter ring inscribed Leroy à Paris and an outer minute ring. The watch is housed in a later pink gold case, with the band engraved with les heures passant le temps vécu reste and a middle section featuring a milled silver design.

The movement operates smoothly for brief intervals. The movement plates exhibit minor marks and scratches. The dial shows slight scuffs and scratches. The case has light scuffs and scratches.

The signature on the edge of the platinum weight indicates that the watch was crafted by Jean-Baptiste-Samson Leroy, who, according to Tardy, was active at Rue Dauphine in Paris from 1772 to 1789.
