A Swiss 14 carat rose gold hunting cased keyless pocket watch with emblem of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, circa 1914. Jewelled gilt lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance. Gold cuvette with engraved signature. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds and outer minute track. Polished case, engraved monogram to the cover, inscription to the back. Case, dial and movement signed.

This watch bears the emblem of Franz Joseph I (1830 – 1916), Emperor of Austria, Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, King of Croatia, King of Galicia and Lodomeria, Grand Duke of Cracow. On the 28th June 1914 in Sarajevo, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir presumptive was assassinated at the hands of Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist. This action led to the start of World War I.
