Gold open faced pocket watch with medal by Vacheron & Constantin

A historical Swiss 18 carat gold open faced keyless pocket watch accompanied by a gold medal, circa 1955. Cal. 1003 manual winding nickel lever movement, mono-metallic compensation balance, 17 jewels. Silvered dial with applied baton indexes. Large bezel, snap on case back. Case, dial and movement signed. Comes with a Vacheron Constantin presentation box, 22 carat gold commemoration medal depicting the Nobel price, Salvatore Quasimodo and an 18 carat gold chain.

This watch belonged to Salvatore Quasimodo, an Italian author and poet, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1959. He is considered to be one of the foremost Italian poets of the 20th century, along with Giuseppe Ungaretti and Eugenio Montale. Salvatore Quasimodo wore the present watch when he received the Noble Prize and the piece has remained in his family ever since.
