In China, for many centuries timepieces has been favourite gifts, sometimes used as attributes of power or emblems of gratitude and friendship. By 1800, a pattern of Oriental market watches emerged with duplex or cylinder escapements, clearly visible centre seconds hand, the movement engraved throughout with flowers and geometric ornament (le calibre chinois). The quality of fine enamel as the beautiful enamel scene we have on this watch were of great importance for these highly decorative pieces. Examples for their work can be seen in many of the world’s foremost collections, including the Palace Museum, Beijing, the Patek Philippe Museum, Geneva, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Musée international d’horlgerie, La Chaux-de-Fonds.
