Pink gold open faced pocket watch

A fine Swiss 18 carat pink gold open faced lever pocket watch, circa 1890. Gilt-brass movement, lever escapement, 10 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, monometallic compensation balance, blued balance spring, index regulator. White enamel dial with painted black Arabic numerals, outer minute track. The case back with green and blue cloisonné enamel representing blooming flowers, a central cartouche, engine turned bezel, hinged cuvette.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
