A Swiss 18K gold and enamel keyless dress watch bearing the cypher of King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, circa 1890. A polished case, the hinged back cover decorated with the cypher of King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria beneath a crown and within an oval red translucent guilloche enamel reserve. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track and outer Arabic five-minute markers, subsidiary seconds and blued steel spade hands. A frosted gilt movement, 15 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, flat-blued steel balance spring, and an index regulator. Dial, case and movement signed.

Ferdinand Maximilian Charles Leopold Marie (1861- 1948) Born in Vienna, he succeeded his father as Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He was proclaimed Prince Regnant of autonomous Bulgaria on July 7, 1887 Ferdinand became Tsar of Bulgaria upon the country’s declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire on October 5, 1908. He abdicated after Bulgaria’s defeat in World War I.
