Gold important musical watch for the Chinese market
–
An important quarter repeating pocket watch with music and center seconds made for the Chinese market and attributed to Piguet & Meylan in Genève, Switzerland, circa 1815. The numbered open faced case of this watch, which was crafted from 18 carat gold, is set with Oriental half pearls on both sides, has an attractively engine turned back lid overlaid with translucent red enamel, a typical Piguet & Meylan band, which is, like the pendant and bow, polychrome enamelled in champlevé style with a light blue background and small oval cartouches in red engine turned enamel matching the back lid. The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, outermost Arabic fifteen minutes, and a steel hour, minute and center seconds hands. The very fine musical movement, which plays on demand, has a cylinder escapement and repeats the hours and quarter hours.
