Gold hunting cased lever watch
–
A very fine Swiss 18 carat gold hunting cased keyless pocket watch with gold train made by Veuve C. Vacheron et Co in Geneva, circa 1871. This timepiece is from a very interesting period in the history of Vacheron & Constantin. An engine turned case with plain bezels, pendant and bow and a gold hinged cuvette. The signed white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, outer minute divisions, sunk auxiliary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued Fleur-de-Lys hands. The nickel silver movement is fitted with 20 rubies, the center one in a gold chaton, a gold train, lever escapement, temperature compensation balance with gold adjustment screws and Breguet balance spring.

Veuve C. Vacheron et Co
Led by Laure Vacheron-Pernessin, the widow (veuve) of César Vacheron, and Catherine-Etienne Vacheron, the widow of Jacques Barthélemy Vacheron, the Vacheron family watchmaking business was renamed Veuve César Vacheron & Cie in 1870. The name Vacheron & Constantin was not restored until 1877. During this seven year period, with the two women in charge, some of the highest quality timepieces were manufactured.
