In 1881, Achille Ditesheim established a workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds with six watchmakers to start a pocket watch manufacturing business. By 1886, brothers Léopold and Isidore Ditesheim joined Achille, and the company was renamed LAI Ditesheim. Around 1900, LAI Ditesheim began developing wristwatches. In 1905, a new production building was built, and the name “Movado (Esperanto for “always in motion) was registered. Movado introduced the Polyplan in 1912 and, in 1926, the Ermeto case watch. The company opened its first US agency in New York in 1924. Movado produced many different calendar watches, mainly in gold cases.
