Gold open faced Art Deco pocket watch

A Swiss 18 carat yellow gold open faced Art Deco pocket watch, made by Tavannes Watch Co., circa 1930. This watch features a refined, nickel plated mechanical movement with manual winding, a lever escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, and 16 jewels with chatons for the gear train pivots. The movement is signed Tavannes Watch Co. on the winding wheel and numbered on the main plate. It is stamped Adjusted Patented with an F-S (Fast/Slow) regulator index on the balance bridge. The cream coloured dial has an outer hexagonal chemin de fer railroad minute track, a matching hexagonal sunken subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and ornate, openwork blued steel cathedral hands.

The solid 18 carat yellow gold case has an original hexagonal shape with a wide polished bezel, engraved with stylised Art Deco black lacquered Arabic numeral hour markers (1–12). The reverse side features a smooth, plain, polished, hexagonal press stud back cover with a subtle satin brushed texture. The case has a stepped edge profile and a matching faceted triangular bow ring flanking a fluted winding crown at 12 o’clock. The interior of the case back is decorated with a fine engine turned perlage finish and officially stamped with the maker’s name, the Swiss Helvetia 18K gold purity hallmark, and the case serial number.
