A decorative gold enamel Swiss hunting cased pocket watch with quarter repeater and date in Chinese script, circa 1890. Produced for the Chinese market.
14 Carat gold, tiered, à goutte (water drop shape) case; front and back with delicate engraving and opaque polychrome enamelling on a light blue background: front lid with two putti and melon on a bed of leaves, back lid with a bouquet of summer flowers, with a gold dome, case maker’s punch mark J&Co., and glazed movement. Enamel dial with radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, gold spade hands, and outer chapter ring with Chinese numerals for indication of the date with a single half moon gold hand. Bridge movement, rhodium plated, Geneva Striping decoration, two hammers / two gongs, gold train, screwed gold chatons, gold screw compensation balance, and counterpoised lever.
