Gold hunting cased keyless lever watch
–
A Swiss hunting cased double dialled keyless pocket watch with calendar and moon phases made by B. Haas Jeune & Cie in Geneva, circa 1890. This timepiece features a damascened nickel movement with a lever escapement, wolf’s tooth winding mechanism and bimetallic compensation balance. The calendar mechanism is mounted on a separate plate hinged to the case. It operates through motion work driven by the center wheel. The calendar advances via a pin that pushes a lever through an aperture to the pearled backplate of the calendar dial.
–
The watch has two dials: the white enamel dial on the front with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track with Arabic five minute numerals, a sunken subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock and a large aperture for displaying the moon phases at 12. It is adorned with blued steel spade hands. The dial on the reverse is also of white enamel featuring a black outer ring for the date and two subsidiary dials with further black enamelled chapter rings for the months and days of the week in French. The watch is signed B. Haas Jeune & Cie Paris & Genève.
–
The case is made of gold with the covers intricately chased and engraved with scrolling floral and foliage designs. The center of the front cover has a vacant shield shaped cartouche. A handset lever is beneath the front bezel, and adjusters for the day and date are located beneath the calendar bezel. The case back is signed B. H. J. & Cie and is numbered 014155, while the front is numbered 055.

The movement is running smoothly, with the calendar advancing correctly at midnight. All calendar adjusters are functioning properly. The dials show a hairline crack running below the moon phases around the centre and extending down to the subsidiary seconds, with another faint line between 4 and 5 o’clock that may be another hairline. The calendar dial has a scratch running downwards from the centre of the month dial. The case is in good condition considering its age, with light scratches and scuffs throughout that are consistent with its age. The engraving and details remain crisp and clear.
