Gold open faced key winding cylinder watch
–
A fine French gold and painted enamel open faced pocket watch with a polychrome enamel scene called Allegory of Music, made for the Ottoman market by Le Roy in the early 19th century. It has a mechanical key winding Lépine calibre movement with a cylinder escapement, a spiral balance spring, and an advance/delay adjustment racket on the balance bridge. The inner gold bowl is marked Le Roy near the winding aperture. The white enamel dial features an outer minute track, bold black Turkish numerals for the hours, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, sleek steel Breguet style hands, and the signature Le Roy executed in Arabic script in the upper centre.
–
The magnificent timepiece is housed in a refined, round, hinged gold case, richly decorated with stylized enamel motifs. The front bezel and matching outer border of the reverse are finished in a soft pink enamel background adorned with continuous painted floral garlands. The central medallion of the reverse back cover is spectacularly decorated with a finely detailed polychrome enamel allegorical music trophy depicting a horn, a lute, a sheet music book, and a bouquet of roses. This is set against a vibrant translucent yellow enamel guilloché ground within a wavy, scalloped gold border. The suspension pendant features a matching fluted stem and an elongated bow elegantly decorated with light blue and white enamel scrollwork.

–
The signature Le Roy on this specific type of early 19th century Lépine calibre refers to the famous Parisian watchmaking dynasty of Basile-Charles Le Roy (1765–1839), which was later continued as Le Roy & Fils.
–
The prestigious Parisian workshop of Le Roy enjoyed an unrivalled international reputation, producing bespoke high grade timepieces for the Ottoman imperial court and the empire’s elite. To satisfy the artistic and cultural sensibilities of this discerning clientele, Le Roy adapted his production by integrating bold Turkish numerals for seamless legibility and focusing on opulent, nonfigurative ornamentations. These exported luxury pieces were distinguished by vivid gold and enamel work, frequently accented with continuous floral garlands and complex guilloché patterns that resonated with the Ottoman taste for visually striking objects.
–
Mechanically, Le Roy’s watches combined superb aesthetic appeal with technical innovation. They were celebrated for their exceptional structural reliability, a vital necessity for patrons travelling across the vast empire far from Parisian workshops. They were frequently equipped with prestigious horological complications such as repeating mechanisms. This magnificent watch stands as an exemplary testament to that lucrative historic trade, beautifully merging French mechanical excellence with the precise aesthetic desires of the highest echelons of Ottoman society.

Signed: Le Roy
