Cowell & Hubbard, Co. is the oldest jeweller in Cleveland. It was founded in 1861 when G. Cowell and his son Herbert took over the silversmith shop of Royal Cowles, which had opened in 1849. Cowell & Co. dealt in clocks, watches, silverware, lamps, fine jewellery and haberdashery goods. Herbert Cowell’s brother Samuel ran the shop from 1877 on after both George and Herbert Cowell had died. Jewellery salesman Addison T. Hubbard joined the company two years later; it was now renamed to Cowell & Hubbard. The shop continued expanding and Addison Hubbard turned it into a renowned jeweller’s shop.
