Gold quarter repeating pocket watch by Breguet
–
A Swiss gold quarter repeating watch with concealed erotic automaton, circa 1825. The watch features a gilded full plate movement with a verge escapement, a plain flat balance, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, a silver regulation plate, a fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars, and a repeating mechanism on coiled gongs. It has a gold engine turned dial with Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, and an aperture bearing the signature Breguet, which opens to reveal a varicoloured amorous couple via a slide in the case side. The case is made of pink gold, with an engine turned back and a cartouche at the base adorned with the monogram RB, and has a later applied yellow gold motif on the top, a milled band, a gold plunge pendant, a gilt metal cuvette with a winding aperture, and a case back marked with the Neuchâtel control mark.

Movement is not functioning. The depressing pendant will engage the repeating train but only briefly, and it is not currently sounding. The automaton does appear to be moving correctly, though it will need adjustment. It will require attention throughout. The dial is in poor condition; it is a thin plate and very dented overall. There are multiple chips to the numerals. The case is in very worn condition, with dents, marks, and scratches; the covers do close, but not very securely. The yellow gold motif applied at the top of the case back is a later restoration, and the plate continues onto the inside case back. The case maker’s mark is worn, but maybe I?C FS.

Signed: Breguet
