Unsigned gold and enamel repeating automaton watch
–
A rare Swiss gold and enamel quarter repeating automaton watch with climbing and striking jacquemarts, circa 1825. This watch has an unsigned gilded full plate movement with verge escapement, a plain flat three-arm balance, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, a silver regulation disc, fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars, and two polished steel hammers repeating on coiled blued steel gongs. The dial has a white enamel chapter ring with Arabic numerals, the centre with an applied vari-colour gold scene, two automaton putti climbing stylized Corinthian columns and striking bells in unison with the repeating work, foliage, and a dog at the base, all against a blued steel background partially skeletonized to reveal movement. The case is gold engine-turned, milled band, repeating locking slide to the left of the pendant, Neuchâtel control mark, stamped FLP incuse, and numbered 9440.

The movement involves running, but the repeating work is sporadically functioning and requires attention. When operating correctly, the putti will climb the columns and then begin striking the bells. The dial chapter ring is in good condition, while the blued steel background has light scratches across the surface. The case has light scuffs and scratches, with some rubbing to the edge of the engine turned back and a scratch at the bottom of the engine turning. The bezel shows some denting and signs of repair to the front bezel beneath the pendant.
–
This is a unique adaptation of the striking Jacquemarts genre. When the pendant is depressed, the two Jacks first climb their columns before striking the bells hanging between them. For a similar scene with climbing Jacquemarts in the form of putti, refer to P. Friess, The Emergence of the Portable Watch, Patek Philippe Museum.
