An extremely rare and large Swiss 18K gold carillon pocket watch with eight complications, circa 1895. Hunting cased keyless pocket watch with a perpetual calendar, moon phases, lunar calendar, chronograph and instantaneous 60-minute register and minute repeating with three hammers. The front cover with engraved crest and coronet, and the back cover with engraved monogram with a hinged gold cuvette.

White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, outermost chronograph seconds, four subsidiary dials for days of the week, date, months concentric with leap-year cycle and 60-minute register, seconds with an aperture for phases of the moon with scale for the moon’s age on the edge and gold fleur-de-lis hands. A matte gilt movement, 35 jewels, straight line counterpoised and calibrated lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator, carillon repeating with three hammers on three gongs activated by a slide in the band. Movement signed Clemence Freres on the dial plate.

This watch is not only in extremely good condition but is also a great rarity. The combination of minute repeating, perpetual calendar and chronograph is well known, however, a watch of this type with carillon minute repeating with three hammers is exceptionally rare with very few examples known.

Clemence Freres The company was founded in 1860 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They exhibited at the World’s Colombian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893.
