A rare Swiss 18 carat yellow gold and cloisonné enamel open faced keyless pendant watch made by Patek Philippe in Geneva, circa 1896. Sold in 1902. The jewelled movement with a cylinder escapement. White enamel dial with Breguet hour numerals, an outer minute track, central gold decoration and Louis XV hands. The case back, bezel and band are cloisonné enamelled, depicting horse chestnut tree leaves in tones of green and brown and one large engraved gold leaf. 18 Carat gold inscribed cuvette. Case, dial, cuvette and movement signed. Comes with an Extract from the Archives.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
