Gold and enamel watch set with diamonds by Jacques Jérôme Gudin

Unique and fine French gold, enamel, diamond-set, verge pocket watch with matching chatelaine, circa 1770-1790.
The watch features a verge movement and a pierced and engraved bridge cock, along with a regulator disc and a plain three-arm gilt balance. The enamel dial is adorned with Roman radial hours, half-hour markings made of diamonds, an outer minutes track displaying Arabic five-minute numerals, and a steel openwork single hand. The gold case is decorated with a green enamel engine-turned back, set with diamonds and a woman reading a book in applied gold. The case’s rim is engraved and set with green and white stones, adding to its overall elegance.
The dial bears the inscription Gudin in script and A PARIS, while the movement is marked with Gudin, A Paris.

Gudin, Jacques Jerome, French watchmaker
Jacques Jérôme (also Gérante) Gudin was born in Paris in 1732 to Jacques Gudin and Henriette Le Noir. She was the daughter of jeweller Pierre Le Noir and sister of Jean-Pierre Le Noir. He became master watchmaker on May 12, 1762, and was then based on the Quai des Orfevres. In 1783 he moved to Rue St Honoré. Jacques Jérôme signed his watches “Gudin fils” and “Gudin”. For years, he worked with Jean Baptiste André Furet ( Furet )—daughter of the goldsmith Jean Marteau. Jacques Jérôme Gudin died in 1789.
