This watch has a very distinctive decoration on the back that recalls François Boucher’s work pensent-ils au raisin.
François Boucher’s famous 1747 painting “pensent-ils au raisin” was a relatively new work of art when this watch was made in the 1760s.
–
The enameller of the current watch almost certainly copied his design from an engraving in which the image is reversed compared to Boucher’s original painting, now held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
The decoration on the back of this watch closely resembles an 18th-century engraving made in Paris by Jacques Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783).
